On December 18, 10,000 farmers are expected in Brussels to denounce the EU’s growing ‘smoke-and-mirrors’ approach to agriculture

Since 2024, farmers have consistently warned the EU about CAP and budget reforms, excessive regulation that restricts agricultural initiative, and the drive to conclude unacceptable trade deals such as with Mercosur. Now, at the end of 2025, expectations remain unmet. The Commission’s determination to push ahead regardless would be a historic mistake for the European project, its farmers, and consumers alike. As such, on December 18 in Brussels, Copa and Cogeca are calling for a pan-European day of protest, just hours before President von der Leyen departs for Brazil to conclude the Mercosur deal and while EU heads of state and government meet for a key session of the European Council on the future EU budget. Around forty farming organisations from across Europe have already confirmed their participation. We are expecting 10,000 farmers to deliver a strong and united message to the Commission.

European Parliament plenary vote aligns with Council: Further step in the right direction on EUDR simplification

The European Parliament has just aligned with the Council of the European Union's approach to the EUDR. This is a major step toward simplification and giving time for the sector to prepare for implementation. Both EU institutions have considered proportionality and feasibility, including simplified rules for micro-operators and better use of existing national databases.

CBAM on fertilisers, set to take effect on 1 January 2026, risks becoming the final straw for EU farmers already struggling with soaring costs and razor-thin margins

Arable farmers across the Union are experiencing historically low, or even negative, margins, largely driven by a sharp increase in production costs since 2020. Fertilisers account for 15–30% of production costs for arable farmers and CBAM could add another 10–30% to prices, depending on unfixed factors yet. Farmers face a "scissors effect" rising costs they can’t absorb, lower yields... Our urgent call to the European Commission and Council of the European Union: Postpone CBAM for fertilisers until clear, predictable rules are in place. Offset CBAM costs for farmers to protect competitiveness and food security.

EU’s 2040 Climate Target: Copa and Cogeca call Trilogue to further clarify critical points

Parliament’s plenary vote on 2040 climate target and the Council's General Approach adopted on 6 November, the 3 institutions will now enter trilogue negotiations. Co-legislators broadly converge on several essential elements, but further finetuning is needed to ensure a climate transition for EU farmers, foresters and agri-cooperatives. We need fair, evidence-based mitigation expectations, robust enabling conditions, and sufficient financial and policy support for land-based sectors.

Letter by Copa and Cogeca's Presidents as Commission's President marginal concessions on MFF/CAP fall far short of what is needed

The new propositions put forward by U. von der Leyen over the weekend on MFF and CAP to answer Parliament's critics are nothing but cosmetic, marginal and technical. For Copa and Cogeca it is simply smoke and mirrors. MEPs seriously considering the challenges faced by agriculture can not accept such a proposal.

It is time for a proportionate, science-based deal in trilogue. NGT 1 plants should be regulated like conventional ones, with no extra sustainability checks or labels because: EU laws already ensure safety and transparency;Global divergence = competitive disadvantage for EU farmers and breeders; Voluntary labelling is enough, no need for mandatory burdens. Let’s unlock innovation for climate-resilient crops nd food security!

Copa and Cogeca urge balanced safguards to protect europe's rice producers as GSP Trilogue nears

With 1.17M tonnes of milled rice imported in 2024/25, over half without tariffs, EU producers face unprecedented pressure from low-priced, duty-free imports, forcing price cuts of 20-30% while production costs increase. Solidarity with developing countries must not come at the expense of EU farmers’ and cooperatives. Without a minimum level of corrective measures, the future of an entire sector and its specific production areas is at risk.

Wine package: Important improvements by COMAGRI, smoothing still needed at trilogues to ensure balance and effectiveness

The Committee on Agriculture voted at a large majority the approval on the wine package yesterday and Copa and Cogeca appreciate the very timely reaction of the Parliament. It reflects the urgency and importance of addressing the challenges faced by the European wine sector , but some provisions still need revision and clarification in the trilogues.

Leaders of the 4 central political groups in the Parliament have sent a letter to the President of the Commission delivering a clear rebuke of her highly controversial proposal for NRPP !

As we have been ringing the alarm bell and repeatedly mobilising on the dangers stemming from the Single Fund approach, we welcomes this parliamentary initiative. The President of the Commission must heed the historic message sent today. An alternative approach is both possible and essential at this stage; a few cosmetic amendments or a sprinkling of additional budget will not suffice ! 🇪🇺 farming organisations call for an alternative that respects the very nature of the CAP, maintaining it as an independent policy with two pillars, a secure and independent budget and inflation-proof funding that complies with EU treaty provisions. We call on MEPs, as well as the Council, to remain extremely firm on this issue.

EU producers urge action on persistent concerns in the revision of the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement

Our organisations acknowledge the revision of Article 29 of the EU–Ukraine Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) and welcome its aim to provide greater certainty and a more stable trading framework for both parties.We also recognise that efforts have been made to address the risks faced by European producers and industries. However, the concessions in many sensitive sectors are significant.

EU Wine Harvest 2025

A fragile recovery with 145.5M hl (+1%), but still 7.5% below the 5-year average and a staggering 40M hl less than 2018. Extreme weather - droughts, floods, wildfires - devastated vineyards in some member states, while tariffs and weak demand squeezed margins. “The 2025 harvest highlights just how challenging conditions remain. Our vineyards often face circumstances that are far from ideal. Yet, in many cases, producers have managed to reverse the recent downward trend. Across Europe, winegrowers are delivering exceptional quality, demonstrating remarkable dedication and resilience in the face of numerous challenges.” Luca Rigotti, Chair of Copa-Cogeca working party on wine.

The Red lines flash action

On Tuesday, 21 October 2025, Copa-Cogeca and its members gathered in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg to urge MEPs not to accept the unacceptable, following the European Commission’s summer release of budget and CAP proposals that crossed all red lines and posed an existential threat to our sectors.

On Monday, 9 December, just hours after the announcement of a political agreement between the European Commission and representatives of the Mercosur bloc, Copa-Cogeca and its members launched a mobilisation against an outdated, unfair agreement with unacceptable cumulative effects for European agriculture.
